Just before, and now just after this 4th of July holiday, more people have been coming by in one day than sometimes in one of our slow weeks! New and old customers. Many who have seen our highway sign BOOKS and More BOOKS! (partially obscured by fast growing bushes) for months or years and finally have the time, inclination, money or......to stop! Thank you for doing so! I would rather help customers than do the ever present paperwork.
We just had a young woman in here with her mom who likes to come to our book store every year on her birthday (today!) and buy an edition of a Dicken's novel and whatever other deals catch her interest. She left with a box of bargains and we were all happy. We also just had a run on Charles Bukowski titles from case #25 which carries a lot of the beat and way out poets and writers such as Ken Kesey, Hunter Thompson, William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. She was very happy and I am sure the consignor will be also. Now to email him that they are gone!
We have been doing some buying and restocking. This includes: 6 more boxes of WW2 history, some religion and some children's books including a few Freddy The Pig titles by Walter Brooks (of the talking horse Mr. Ed fame), which I have just put downstairs. More mysteries are still coming out, mainly hardcover at paperback prices. In case # 83 are a few of Mary P. Wells Smith's titles (Young Puritains in Captivity, Boy Captive of Canada, Boy Captive of Deerfield and some in her Jolly Good Times series.) And I have a box of Vintage Science Fiction titles in the first room in case #23 as there is no room downstairs with the other Sci-Fi!
That's all for now. Just a little insight into a busy summer day at the Whately Antiquarian Book Center.
