. Oh yes...the mezzanine area has increased their discount to 60% off...That's a few thousand books in there at that great discount. Come lighten our load.

Well, we only got 5-8 inches in this last snowstorm which has paralyzed areas on the coast and south of Boston. Glad to dodge that bullet. But the storms have really cut into shopping days during our annual Sale... soooo....we are going to extend it! The last day will be Sunday, February 15th (instead of the 10th). Come on out and enjoy the bargains.

It's snowy and icy and cold.... and time for our Annual 3 week Winter Sale. Come warm yourself here in the old schoolhouse and dig for deals and great buys. Something for everyone. Most books at 40% off with the mezzanine at 50%. Then a couple of dealers have gone higher to 60%. Check them out!
The end of another year in the book world. And we are still here! Let's see what 2015 has to bring us....in the way of health, friendships, buyers, travel and of course ....books! We are trying to find room for more paper and ephemera also. As my long deceased father always said.."Begin the New Year as you would want the whole year to go." So I shall. And may all of you. Open tomorrow, 10-2pm Christmas Eve Day for any weary travelers who may come by. Barbara will have some home-baked cookies, some Christmas music on..(the three tenors or Bing Crosby?) The last week that the man selling his Jazz CD's will be here as he's leaving for the winter. Still some blues and bluegrass and a classical mix elsewhere. See you then or in the New Year!
Even with 22+ mph wind reports on Weather.com my intrepid husband spent the morning set up at the last day of our local seasonal flea market across the river in Hadley, Mass. No books or paper would survive the gusts, so out came rugs and heavy items he has collected over the years. And he sold several rugs and more! It begins again in April, usually the 1st Sunday after Easter. Check it out if you like cool early morning (daybreak or 6am) walks around a wet field with a promise of discovery.
The oil tanks are filled, the storm windows replaced and there is pumpkin bread out today...so it must be Fall. So what has come in recently? We are finishing going through 4 boxes of German language books. Many classics by Hesse, Rilke and others (in German) with some hardcover, some paperbacks. Most in the modern type (does anybody still read the older script?). Have added some of them to our downstairs foreign language section and have also made a 2 row section of them in the 2nd room (almost) across from the doorway to the downstairs corridor. I have restocked my 2 children's and illustrated books sections (cases 82 & 83) and in the spirit of MOVING ALONG SOME OF THE 100'S OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS, I HAVE HERE AND IN STORAGE ,THEY ARE NOW 50% OFF. Don't know for how long, but at least a couple of weeks. Check them out! Getting a bit busy this Sunday... and the sun has come out! All for now. Stay warm, preferably with a good book! PS Do you want to buy a building full of books and ready to go? Call 413-247-3272 or inquire within. It's that time again. The pumpkins have been harvested in the nearby fields and Whately Book Center is ready for it's Annual 10 Day Fall Book Sale. We have been restocking like mad and will be ready when the doors open at 10am on Thursday 10/9. Will you be there?
Special Hours on Saturday 10/11 til 8pm. We will have food and drinks for all who come from 5-8pm. Noshing in the stacks...a booklover's dream. See you there. We have marked our 3 main fiction areas 25% off until further notice. Come check them out. Also our large New England section in the 2nd room and a few other select areas are also 25% off. Stock up on summer, fall and winter reading!
Time to catch up on this blog! As many people know, we have the bookstore on the market. Don't expect it to be sold for a while so BUSINESS AS USUAL! (But do tell any potential buyers out there that you might know!) We have been busy going through all of our storage areas and getting the 100's of books in them out on the shelves, the floor or wherever...Of course we should have been doing this all along. Buuuutttt....You buy ten boxes of lovely books and start to price them up....then someone calls with another lot of perhaps 20 boxes that you pick up and which get neatly stacked on top of those and then it gets busy selling and there is little time to price them all...then someone calls and says their great Aunt Elsie's books have to be cleaned out of the house in the next 24 hours... and so on. So come on down. We have also been adding MANY boxes to the $1.00 garage. Not very tidy in there but a lot of good deals. Check us out! Here are some non-book treats you might not have known we carry! Pages of Victorian Scraps perfect for scrapbooking or framing or just gazing at... (see above and below) HERE ARE SOME PRINTS Perfect for decorating a child's room...or yours! What a beautiful snowfall! But then we didn't have to be anywhere but home and knew our farmer neighbor would plow us out early.
The store parking lot is already beginning to melt down to the ground. Just in time for this holiday weekend. As we don't take off for this holiday we will be open our usual hours. Valentines Day! So many early memories of collecting those flimsy silly punny Valentines at school in each of our own homemade mail boxes. The frizzle of electricity when I saw Ronnie or Bobbie or Todd had signed their name to them. Even if you know that everyone got one from everyone else. Nowadays it's a nice dinner at home, a little special so we are having shrimp, and a couple of extra hugs to remind each other (my husband and I) how blessed we are to be together and healthy. And I baked him a heart shaped gluten free apple pie as a surprise. We are continuing to go through and empty our myriad storage areas here at the book store. So many times we would buy a lot of books, lets say 10 boxes, then another lot would come in right after and would go on top and so on. So we are doing a lot of excavating these days. And when the weather gets warmer we will be going into our unheated storage areas. It's been fun to see what has come out. Recently, a lot of contemporary religious titles, more cooking and books on Britain galore, left over from the Henry Steele Commager lot we bought 15+ years ago! A few dealers have their books on sale this month. Some of them are: WWco's (cases 38 &39) mainly Nautical Books are at 60% off; SL (Case 29) literature and poetry First editions; AMS (case 28) science fiction and fantasy. Waiting for the warm weather, in a month or so, to reopen the $1 garage. We have been restocking it for the past several weeks. Expecting to have some special Sales by Topic this Spring. As we did with Cooking and Mysteries last year. If you want to be notified send us your email if we don't already have it. We will not be sending out post cards for these sales. Happy Valentine's Day! And do something fun in the snow! |
